Cash on Delivery vs Prepaid: Which Should You Choose?

23 October 2026 · 4 min read

Most Indian shoppers have the same question at checkout: pay now, or pay when it arrives? Both work well, and the right choice depends on the order.

When cash on delivery makes sense

COD is comfortable when you are buying from a store for the first time, or when you want to see the parcel before you pay. You pay the delivery person when the order reaches you, so nothing leaves your account until it does.

  • Good for a first order from a new seller.
  • Useful if you do not want to enter card or UPI details.
  • Keep the exact amount ready, since the delivery person may not carry change.

When prepaid is the better pick

Paying online with UPI, a card or net banking skips the handover at the door and often avoids extra handling steps. Some stores offer prepaid-only for certain products, and some limit cash on delivery to smaller order values.

A prepaid payment is also easier to track: you have a receipt immediately, and if an order is cancelled before it ships, the refund goes back to the same method.

How to check what a store allows

Enter your pincode on the product page. It tells you whether the store delivers there and whether cash on delivery is available for that product and area. If it says prepaid only, you can still order, you just pay online.
